  • Chiefs Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

They went through three kickers in 2007 without falling in love with any of them.

Maybe it's not surprising then, to see the Chiefs looking at three more lightly known candidates for their kicker's job in 2008.

After a year in which Kansas City cut '07 fifth-round draft pick Justin Medlock after one game, then tried to get by with Dave Rayner and aging John Carney, the Chiefs will take a look at two other NFL castoffs and an undrafted rookie in 2008.

The leading contender, if NFL experience is any factor, would appear to be Billy Cundiff, who played on and off for four seasons with Dallas (2002-05). He is best known for kicking a then-record seven field goals in a Monday night game against the Giants in 2003.

Brian DeMarco, a former NFL player with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cincinnati Bengals, listens during a news conference in Chicago, Tuesday, May 13, 2008, where an initiative was announced that would help retired NFL players in dire need of medical care to receive care with millions of dollars in donated medical services. At 36, DeMarco walks with a cane and is unable to get in and out of a chair without assistance because of a spinal injury. Mounting bills have left him and his family homeless several times.

Mike Ditka gained some important support in his bid to help players who are now ailing in retirement. Doctors in Arizona and Pennsylvania announced on Tuesday that they are donating medical care to those in need through the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund. "The game today is not what it is today because of the people today," said Ditka, the group's most vocal member.
